What Colors Match With Indigo When Painting A Bedroom?

Indigo is a color which lies between blue and violet on the spectrum of visible light.

When painting a room, what colors match with the color indigo? What are some complimentary colors to the color Indigo?

According to feng shui, there are two types of complements: Psychological Complements and Intuitive Complements.

There are several psychological complements in regards to the color indigo: green-red, orange-blue and purple-yellow. These colors would be considered complementary by most people because they can easily be created by mixing different amounts of red, yellow or blue into their complementaries. However, as per Feng Shui psychology these mixes tend get muddy when mixed together while still maintaining their individual hues. The colors that are considered a psychological complement to the color indigo can be physically mixed together to produce the hue of indigo, or one could use them separately in an art project to represent the color.

While there are several intuitive complements to the color Indigo (blue-green, red-violet and yellow-orange) it is difficult for most people to visually identify what these colors might look like when combined. An example of one complementary color that does tend to pop up in nature is blue-green found at ocean depths where light cannot penetrate causing photosynthetic organisms such as phytoplankton to take on this shade of green / blue(see picture below). In Feng shui theory this color combination is said to produce a sense of infinity, and is also considered one of the lucky colors.

The complimentary color to Indigo (blue-violet) can only be produced by mixing blue with red or violet, which are too difficult for most people to see as being complementary in nature. In Feng Shui psychology this color combination is considered to bring about thoughts that lead to disharmony within relationships.

According to Feng Shui theory a room painted in the color Indigo will protect against negative energy from “evil eyes”. When combined with yellow it creates an air of mystery and spiritual inspiration, while when combined with black it brings out the hidden evil behind what seems innocent and pure.

Indigo is one of my favorite colors because I’ve always enjoyed seeing items in this shade of blue/violet. The first thing I bought for our home was a dining room table which was beautiful espresso wood with a glass top, silver legs and indigo colored seats. This is something that we all enjoy sitting at almost daily for meals together as well as doing homework or reading books.
